If only I could take home…

We’ve been so busy this week in Portugal. We are either driving, my head in maps, or looking around, not wanting to miss a thing. Today it’s nice to spend a quiet moment on our beautiful terrace in Tavira in South Portugal. It’s full of comfy chairs and succulents of all types. At roof height the Clay roof tiles are just as decorative as everything else we see. These are the things we can’t bring back home. Though, I’ll make sure the inspiration makes it back to Memphis.

Bussaco with the friars and Napoleon

On 26, May 2014 | No Comments | In Musings | By Lindsey

20140526-130107-46867739.jpg

I’ve needed some inspiration.
A mix of history and beauty.
Camille booked us at the most amazing hotel in the middle of the Bucaco National Forest. Not only is the hotel full of treasures like old photos and amazing furniture from the mid-1800’s, but attached to the hotel is a monastery. In it are original religious paintings and figures. The garden dating back to 1886 took my breath away or maybe it was the winding nature trail, established by the friars, we took a bit ago? It’s amazing to think of the lives spent here in the middle of the woods. Apparently Napoleon’s men fought a battle here.

Oh Lisboa! Day 1

On 24, May 2014 | No Comments | In Travel | By Lindsey

Oh Lisboa!

That’s the name of our neighborhood restaurant. We aren’t in Lisbon proper. Instead, about 15 minutes in the rural area.

Our home is full of drawings artfully hanging in every inch of the house. The fabrics are bright and beautiful. So far the seafood is amazing.

We just landed this morning and already Camille and I have loved our time and the new friends we’ve met.

I can’t take my eyes off the walls, though. Moving north tomorrow in our scary little car.

Sade ( once again ) :: Fantastic Music Friday

On 23, May 2014 | No Comments | In Music | By Lindsey

Action News 5’s Traffic Tracker Janeen Gordon the other morning told me if she hears Sade one more time she might lose her mind.

sade-adu-beauty-voice-80s-allwhite-kosi-f

I just stared at her. What was she talking about. How cold someone say that? Do I need to stick up for Sade? Has she only heard Smooth Operator? She must know there is so much more.

Then she reminded me that she plays it over and over during her job as a dj at a radio station that mostly plays smooth love songs. If you heard her voice you’d know why she’s perfect for this gig.

Anyhow, this is on my mind because I went on a quick trip yesterday. Landed back in Memphis around 8 pm. As soon as I stepped outside I was knocked out by the humidity and strong fragrance of gardenia. It’s almost summer in the south and that means it’s time to listen to Sade on my porch. No better time of the year. I’ve written several blogs about why I love Sade – about what her music reminds me of ( no it’s nothing naughty ) – so this post will just be to announce – it’s time.

Portugal :: hours away

On 23, May 2014 | No Comments | In Travel | By Lindsey

Our flight is just hours away…
My best friend and I are going to Portugal. We’ll fly into Lisbon and then drive in any direction we like. Well, actually, Camille has it all planned out and I’m so thankful to her. Two years ago we discovered Germany and I can’t wait to hit the ground running again. This time I imagine there will be more wine enjoyed than beer. I hope to see beautiful homes, architecture, landscape, flowers and enjoy amazing food and drink.

This is one of the true joys of life! Adventure!!! Until I leave I’m snuggling with Bridget. I love her so much.

War on Drugs :: Fantastic Music Friday

On 16, May 2014 | No Comments | In Music | By Lindsey

20140516-094134.jpg

The name is definitely memorable. The music is just outstanding.

War on Drugs is a Philly band that a musically inclined friend of mine told me about a couple of years ago. Actually, she first gabbed endlessly about the group’s former partner Kurt Vile. ( for good reason) I first dove into Vile and, as always happens, I wanted everything he had done or anyone who was remotely associated with him. Thanks to that I discovered a band that just keeps putting out good music. In my far from sophisticated music words, War on Drugs has a big song 80’s vibe mixed with the best kind of Americana ( maybe a little Bruce Springstein, at times). Though, you’ll notice what is already a fantastic song from the beginning turns into something quite special a minute or so later. Just really special music.

Lost in the Dream

“Under the Pressure “ from Lost in the Dream
The is one of the prettiest songs I’ve EVER heard. It’s just amazing.

“Suffering” from Lost in the Dream

“Disappearing” from Lost in the Dream
So lovely – just let it go

Feeling the burn….

On 15, May 2014 | No Comments | In Travel | By Lindsey

20140515-095406.jpg

Just minutes before this picture was taken I suffered a horrible burn at the hands of my boyfriend. He was kind enough to help steam my dress (note * next time take dress off) but slipped and held the steam wand up to my dress, which meant it was also against my skin.

We’re talking blister. Oh Lawd. If you see me cringing. This is why.

We were at one of my favorite parties of the year. A spring party in Matt’s hometown in Georgia. These white dinner jackets always make me smile. So old school classy.
