I would love to hear him speak. What a story he has to tell.
Not that I’d understand much of it. I assume it would be in Russian. Above is a picture of Mikhail Khodorkovsky giving a public lecture on ‘Rights and freedoms’ at the National Technical University of Ukraine in Kiev, Monday, March 10th.
He was only just released from prison in December. He served a decade for tax evasion/ rubbing Mr. Putin the wrong way. The video of the two verbally going back and forth is fascinating. It’s also haunting as you know what happened not long later. As he stood before judge after judge, you saw the once richest man in Russia become an essay writing prisoner.
I remember the day he was released. The timing so close to the Olympics. Regardless, I was so glad for him. I want to read more of what he has to say. He came into his wealth at such a young age. He changed his moves with the fluctuating economy and made truly brilliant decisions.
In his speech yesterday he obviously spoke in support of those Ukrainians who are resisting Russian occupation. He also urged the West for assistance. Interesting to hear him make his first anti-Russian / anti-Putin regime comments.
Right now Khodorkovsky is top of mind for me. I’m in the middle of the book The Oligarchs. It details the rise of men like Khodorkovsky who, when the Soviet Union fell, were at the right place at the right time and made fortunes. Money that couldn’t have been imagined just years prior. The way they manipulated the turmoil and changing economy is simply fascinating. Many of them later ended up on the wrong side of the government. The book is a bit dated. It was written in 2001, but the history of this peculiar time is a great read.
The article I linked above says, “Following his release from prison, Khodorkovsky said he is not interested in politics and will devote himself to helping Russia develop civil society. Khodorkovsky plans to apply for permanent residency in Switzerland.” He has or at least had a grown son in New York.
Been shopping for swimsuits. whew
Mom and I are hitting the beach next month.
Ladies, you can understand the exhaustion.
Shopping for them online (the models / are they real people) is almost worse than trying them on in person, if that is possible. You know, you tell yourself, “It will look better with a tan.” or “I have a month to loose some of this extra chunk around my thighs.”
Who cares, right? Just pick one. Seems I’m not the only one googling “modest swimsuits”. What adult woman who eats a couple of meals a day can really wear those small pieces of cloth that they some how justify charging way too much $$$ for us to purchase! Plus, I don’t really want to look sexy with my mom and dad? Just want to enjoy the breeze/sun and swim?
Making myself laugh by thinking about Matt Laur on Halloween.
Just walked up to young mom in a local park in Germantown. Trying to get an interview, I started to introduce myself “I’m Lindsey…”and she cut me off there. She said, ” You are Lindsey Brown from Meridian, Mississippi”
Her husband was stationed at the navy base there. Small world or region, rather. Made my day of filling in for our Saturday morning anchor.
My bad mood started early.
We all get them.
I know why I’m in one.
More specifically, I’m half way out.
It was a long day.
I’m tired of cold weather.
Don’t want to exercise.
I just want to be alone.
To cheer myself up I’m looking at this picture.
Funny, right? It’s those stubby legs!
Although, I really want to cheer myself up with…
Matt likes to tease me by randomly texting me this picture of a rare moment of total loss of control. Instead, I ate two apples and stopped following goop / Gwyneth Paltrow on every platform. Feel much better now.
Don’t know what I’d do without my sweet Bridge. She’s been my best friend for…..almost 6 years now. Always by my side, well, when she wants to be – she only does what she wants. Today it’s sitting right next to the shower. The whole time!
I typically wear flats to work or heels with as comfy a heel as possible. ( really, do they exist? ) My friend, Emily, prefers crazy high heels. Don’t know how she does it, but they do look good. And, yes, they are Louboutin.
I’m getting old.
It’s sunny today! We have all been hit in the face with dark skies and cold air for weeks. That cold air takes my breath away at 3 AM. Hurray for tiny improvements. This wallpaper looks how I have felt today. Refreshed and inspired. We can do this, guys! My fingers are crossed Atlanta keeps melting. I have a plane to catch and a Valentine to hug.

Don’t like Valentine’s Day? The good news: at least it’s also Friday. I’ve written blogs in the past where I ranted about how silly Valentine’s Day is or, even more dramatically, how I don’t believe in romantic love. I know, which Bridget Jones movie was this in? If not there needs to be one! Now, for the second year in a row, I have an adorable valentine who, after three weeks of separation, I’m flying to see for a quick weekend. Long distance is tough, but we are very much in love. Alright, enough of the gushy stuff, I have to share one of the funniest valentine’s gifts I’ve seen. A friend of mine bought these cuff links for her on again/off again love interest. Yes, that’s Biggie & Tupac.
And appropriately they are called:
They aren’t on as of two days ago when the came in the mail. The good news, I think they will work for any holiday.
Also, one of my girlfriend’s has some temporary work in Memphis and has been staying with me for a little while. She’s there when I’m not, and says she watches my birds, Lenny and Leona, all day. I knew they were very close, but she says they are so in love it’s almost annoying. Apparently, all the couple does is sit, smooch and put food in the other’s mouth. Well, actually my friend says the male feeds the female all day. Jumps off his perch to get food from the bottom of the cage, and hops back up to sweetly deliver it right in her mouth. Hey, I like being fed, too.
Then, after she and I talked about my birds, I saw these love birds on display at the MET. This is from 1889.
And I have to thank my mom for sending me a very thoughtful gift full of sweet little trinkets from cookies, bar-tending tools, since we love our martinis, and candy. She’s my original valentine.
However you spend your day, I hope you do something you love and remember to count your blessings. That’s my goal for the day. All my love,
This is a song I think probably 99% of the population can’t help but love, at least sing along with when it’s on the radio.
Despite its unlikely role in a newsroom, our morning crew has been singing it non-stop since Thursday morning when one of our photographers let the cat out of the bag. We aren’t sure if it’s always his ring tone or just for a special caller, but when his phone rang in the middle of the newsroom, we were loudly serenaded by George Michaels, Never Gonna Dance Again. He couldn’t hit silent fast enough.
This “Fantastic Music Friday” is for you, our unnamed photographer. You brought us a lot of fun these last two days. We sang at our desks and during commercial breaks. Keep taking those calls, buddy.
iPhone and iPad apps
The latest and greatest apps usually come to iOS first and here are some.
- NBC Sports Live Extra: The official app is focused on providing video coverage of the event. You can use it for streaming live events, setting reminders for your favorite sport, and replaying events you missed. It is ad-sponsored so you will see some at the bottom.
- NBC Olympics Highlights and Results: This is the kind of application I will likely use more than streaming video where you can easily view your favorite sports and check out the results, latest news, videos, medal counts and more. It also serves as a second screen experience when you are viewing nightly NBC coverage.
- Sochi 2014 Results: This app is purely for those who want the stats and to see competition results, medal counts, and athlete profiles. You can also setup your own coverage schedule.
- Sochi 2014 Guide: This application is designed to aid those who might actually be at the Winter Games or who want to find out a bit more about the venues.
- 2014 Team USA Road to Sochi: This app covers Team USA and gives you information on how the athletes made it to Sochi, including Olympic and Paralympic competitors.

I always enjoy going out on stories, but this one was really cool.
Can you imagine getting the chance to pick out the foods your school cafeteria would serve?
Shelby County School kids got that chance. I walked in and was instantly a kid again. It was like a giant buffet, and it all looked amazing.
There was pizza, chicken sandwich patties, chicken nuggets, you know, all the items you’d expect in the lunch line, but with a healthy twist. Most everything was whole grain and reduced fat. With at least 50 vendors representing food distributors from across the country, the gymnasium was packed with kids, teachers and FOOD. As a food lover it was great to see the kids so thrilled over fruit cocktail without syrup. They let me try it, and it was wonderful. What a smart way to get kids excited to eat healthy food. A+ idea!

Mom and I didn’t get to celebrate her 60th birthday together last year, so this was a big birthday for us to mark. Two in one day!
She has been in Memphis for the week and we have gone nonstop from junk shopping, TJ Maxx trips and Downton Abbey marathon viewings. I love having her here with me. Most special person to me.
I took her to dinner at Restaurant Iris in Midtown. It’s in a charming old house. Nothing like an early 5 pm dinner. She’s a good sport with my crazy schedule.
Her bday bread pudding was perfect. Caramel and seasoned pecans.
Side note – I finally got to wear this fall inspired dress I bought last spring in New Orleans. It has fall colors, acorns and this amazing open back with a tie.
Plenty of fun left for the week. Oh and here’s mom’s pretty new birthday monogrammed canvas bag / U.S. made, by the way, my new obsession!
